Hepatitis B Vaccine
The hepatitis B vaccine protects the liver from a virus that can cause chronic infection, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
It’s safe, effective, and now recommended for essentially all adults who aren’t already protected.
The Basics
Hepatitis B spreads through blood and body fluids and can become a lifelong (chronic) infection that quietly damages the liver over time. The vaccine prevents infection and, in doing so, prevents one of the leading causes of liver cancer worldwide.
Who & When
- All adults 19 through 59 who aren’t already immune.
- Adults 60 and older with risk factors, or on request.
- Recommended in pregnancy if not already protected.
The bottom line: if you’re under 60 and not already immune, the hepatitis B vaccine is recommended.
The Schedule
Depending on the product, the series is two doses over one month or three doses over six months. Once completed, protection is long-lasting and usually doesn’t require boosters.
Screening & the Vaccine
Because the CDC now recommends every adult be screened for hepatitis B at least once, screening and vaccination often go together, we check whether you’re infected, immune, or susceptible, and vaccinate if you’re not protected. See our hepatitis B screening page.
Is It Safe?
Yes. The hepatitis B vaccine has decades of safety data. Side effects are typically limited to a sore arm and occasionally mild fatigue.
