Understanding Your Testosterone

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. This test measures the total amount in your blood and helps explain symptoms like low energy, low libido, or mood changes.

What It Measures

This test measures your total testosterone, the overall amount circulating in your blood. Testosterone supports muscle, bone, sex drive, mood, and energy in men (and in smaller amounts in women).

Levels naturally vary through the day and are usually highest in the morning, which is the best time to test.

What Your Results Can Mean

Result What It Means
LowLow Testosterone Can cause fatigue, low libido, difficulty with erections, low mood, and loss of muscle. Confirmed with a repeat morning test.
NormalBalanced Your testosterone is in the expected range.
HighElevated Less common; may relate to supplements or, rarely, other conditions.

What’s Most Important to Know

A single low result should be confirmed with a repeat morning test before any diagnosis. Symptoms matter as much as the number.

If your total testosterone is borderline, Dr. Mui may order a fuller panel (free and bioavailable testosterone) for a more accurate picture.
