Understanding Syphilis Lesion Testing
This test checks a sore or lesion directly for syphilis by detecting the bacteria’s DNA. It can confirm syphilis early, sometimes before blood tests turn positive.
What It Checks For
Syphilis is a bacterial infection spread through sexual contact. Its first sign is often a painless sore. Testing that sore directly can catch the infection very early.
This test uses PCR to detect the DNA of the syphilis bacteria (Treponema pallidum) from a swab of the lesion.
What Your Results Can Mean

| NegativeNot Detected | The syphilis bacteria was not found in the sample, though blood testing may still be recommended. |
| PositiveSyphilis Detected | Confirms syphilis. It is fully curable with antibiotics, usually penicillin, and earlier treatment is simpler. |

Syphilis is often diagnosed with a combination of lesion testing and blood tests, since each is better at different stages.
