Understanding Your Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral involved in muscle and nerve function, sleep, and a steady heart rhythm. This test checks whether your level is in a healthy range.
What It Measures
The test measures the amount of magnesium in your blood. You get magnesium from foods like leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains. Low levels can result from poor intake, certain medications (like some diuretics), or digestive issues.
What Your Results Can Mean
| Result | What It Means |
|---|---|
| LowDeficiency | Can cause muscle cramps, twitching, fatigue, poor sleep, and, when severe, heart rhythm problems. |
| NormalBalanced | Your magnesium is in the healthy range. |
| HighExcess | Uncommon, usually related to reduced kidney function or high-dose supplements. |
What’s Most Important to Know
Mild low magnesium is common and easily corrected with diet or supplements. We also check it when potassium or calcium are low, since they are closely linked.
Dr. Mui will interpret your magnesium alongside your symptoms, medications, and kidney function.
