Understanding Your LH
LH (Luteinizing Hormone) is a reproductive hormone from the pituitary gland. It helps evaluate fertility and how the ovaries or testes are being signaled.
What It Measures
LH is made by the pituitary gland in your brain. In women it triggers ovulation and helps regulate the menstrual cycle. In men it signals the testes to make testosterone.
LH is often measured together with FSH, and the pattern of the two helps locate where a hormone problem is coming from.
What Your Results Can Mean
| Result | What It Means |
|---|---|
| High LHOvaries or Testes Under-Responding | The pituitary is working hard to stimulate glands that are not responding, seen in conditions like menopause or testicular problems. |
| Low LHPituitary or Brain Signal Low | The signal from the brain is reduced, which can affect ovulation or testosterone production. |
| Normal LHBalanced Signaling | Reproductive hormone signaling appears normal. |
What’s Most Important to Know
LH results depend heavily on context, including your sex, age, and, for women, the timing in the menstrual cycle. We interpret it together with FSH and other hormones.
Dr. Mui will explain what your LH means for your specific situation, whether that is fertility, cycle changes, or low testosterone.
