Understanding Your HIV Test
This is a modern, 4th-generation HIV screening test. It detects infection earlier than older tests and includes automatic follow-up testing to confirm any positive result.
How the Test Works
The 4th-generation test looks for both HIV antibodies and a viral protein called p24 antigen. Because p24 appears early, this test can detect infection sooner than antibody-only tests.
If the initial screen is positive, the lab automatically runs confirmatory tests (reflex testing) so you get an accurate final answer from a single draw.
What Your Results Can Mean

| NegativeNo HIV Detected | No sign of HIV. If you had a very recent exposure, a repeat test later may be advised. |
| Positive (Confirmed)HIV Detected | Confirmatory testing supports an HIV infection. Today HIV is a manageable condition with effective treatment. |
| IndeterminateNeeds Follow-Up | Occasionally results are unclear and additional testing is needed. |
What’s Most Important to Know
Routine HIV screening is recommended for all adults at least once, and more often with ongoing risk factors. Testing is a normal part of preventive care.
