Understanding Herpes (HSV) Testing

This test checks a genital sore or lesion for the herpes simplex virus (HSV), types 1 and 2. Testing a lesion directly is the most accurate way to diagnose herpes.

What It Checks For

Herpes simplex virus causes cold sores and genital sores. Type 1 (HSV-1) more often causes oral sores but can affect the genitals; type 2 (HSV-2) is the usual cause of genital herpes.

This swab test samples an active sore and looks for the virus’s genetic material, which is more reliable than blood antibody tests for confirming the cause of a specific lesion.

What Your Results Can Mean

Result What It Means
NegativeNot Detected The virus was not found in the sample. If the sore was healing, testing can sometimes miss it.
Positive, Type 1 or Type 2HSV Detected Confirms herpes as the cause of the lesion and identifies the type, which helps predict how often it may recur.

What’s Most Important to Know

Herpes is very common and manageable. While there is no cure, medication can shorten outbreaks, reduce how often they happen, and lower the chance of passing it to a partner.

Dr. Mui will explain what your result means, including the difference between the types, and discuss treatment and prevention.
